How the true cost of living comparison works

Rather than relying on a single generic "cost of living index," this tool builds its comparison from several real, independently sourced dimensions — purchasing-power-equivalent salary, where that salary would rank among local earners, electricity cost, working hours relative to the national average, and historical inflation impact. Each is normalised only against the other countries you've selected to compare, then averaged into a composite score, so the ranking reflects a genuine head-to-head comparison of your specific shortlist rather than a fixed global index.

The biggest limitation is what isn't included: housing, healthcare, and childcare costs — often the largest and most variable expenses in a household budget — aren't modelled here, partly because reliable per-country data doesn't exist in a comparable form and partly because these costs vary dramatically within a single country (a capital city versus a rural town can differ enormously), so a national average would be misleading even if one were available. Treat this comparison as a structured starting point for research, not a complete relocation budget. Why is housing cost not part of the affordability score?
There's no per-country median property price reference dataset in this platform to compute a real housing burden for an arbitrary target country, and this tool doesn't fabricate one. Everything shown (purchasing power, local salary percentile, electricity cost, working hours, inflation) is computed from real reference data.
How is the True Affordability Score calculated, and what does 100 mean?
Each dimension is min-max normalized across only the countries you've selected to compare, then averaged. 100 means a country is the strongest performer of your selected set on that measure; 0 means the weakest — it's a relative ranking within this comparison, not a universal scale, so a 100 doesn't mean "perfect" in absolute terms. Add or remove a country and every score recalculates relative to the new set.
Does the score compare each country to my origin country, or just to each other?
Just to each other — the origin country you enter isn't itself scored or included in the 0-100 ranking, so a 100 means "best of the destinations you picked," not "better than home." For a direct comparison to your origin, use the vs origin column, which shows how much your purchasing power would rise or fall in each destination on the same salary.
What's the difference between PPP-equivalent salary and local salary percentile?
PPP-equivalent salary is the amount of local money that buys the same as your current salary. Local salary percentile is how that amount ranks against actual local earners — high purchasing power and a high percentile usually go together, but not always.
How is the cost of living comparison calculated?
Each destination country is scored across several dimensions — purchasing-power-equivalent salary, where that salary ranks among local earners, electricity cost, working hours relative to the national average, and historical inflation impact — normalised relative to only the other countries you've selected, then averaged into a composite score.
What data source is used?

How does purchasing power parity affect the comparison?
PPP conversion is what makes the salary comparison meaningful across countries with very different price levels — it translates your salary into the local-currency amount with equivalent purchasing power, rather than a raw exchange-rate conversion that would be skewed by currency market factors unrelated to actual cost of living.
