How this is calculated
Each option adds (or subtracts) 14 minutes to fall asleep plus a whole number of 90-minute sleep cycles — 4, 5, or 6 — to your bedtime or wake time, so you're more likely to wake up between cycles rather than in the middle of deep sleep.
Within each 90-minute cycle, sleep moves through distinct stages. NREM (non-rapid eye movement) stage 1 is the brief transition into sleep; NREM stage 2 is lighter sleep that makes up the largest share of total sleep time; NREM stage 3 is deep sleep, when the body does most of its physical repair, tissue growth, and immune-system reinforcement — this is the stage you're most groggy waking from, and why timing wake-ups to a cycle boundary matters. REM sleep, associated with dreaming and memory consolidation, follows deep sleep and lengthens in each successive cycle across the night.
