How price indexation works

Price indexation adjusts a historical value to account for inflation between two periods. The calculation uses the Eurostat Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), a standardised measure of consumer price inflation across EU and EEA member states. Each country publishes a monthly index level with 2015 as the base year (index = 100 in 2015). To index a value, multiply it by the ratio of the target period's index to the base period's index: indexed value = original value × (target index ÷ base index).

This is the standard method used in commercial lease reviews, long-term supply contracts, legal damages calculations, and public procurement. The HICP "all items" (CP00) index is the most commonly cited benchmark for general indexation; it covers the full basket of consumer goods and services. Eurostat publishes a flash estimate around the end of each month and a final figure around the 17th of the following month — this calculator uses the final figures, refreshed on the 18th of each month.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HICP?
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices is a standardised measure of consumer price inflation published by Eurostat, comparable across EU and EEA member states, with 2015 set as the base year (index = 100).
When should I use HICP vs national CPI?
HICP is the cross-country comparable measure most commonly specified in EU-wide contracts, leases, and cross-border agreements. Some domestic contracts specify a country's own national CPI instead — check your contract's wording if in doubt.
Why does the available data start at 2010?
Eurostat HICP data exists before 2010, but this tool only loads 2010 onward. Contact support if you need earlier periods.
What is CP00?
CP00 is the HICP "all items" index — it covers the full basket of consumer goods and services, and is the most commonly cited benchmark for general indexation.
Can I use this in my own app?
Yes — every calculator on Stupidly Clever has a matching REST API and MCP tool that runs the same underlying logic.
