Currency Converter

Convert between currencies using live exchange rates.

How currency conversion works

This calculator multiplies your amount by the current exchange rate between the two currencies you choose, using live mid-market rates covering more than 160 currencies. The mid-market rate is the baseline rate banks and payment providers use before adding their own margin — useful as a reference point, though the rate you're actually offered when exchanging money will typically include a markup on top of this.

A mid-market tool like this one is the right choice when you just need an accurate reference rate — checking what a foreign price really costs, or converting figures for comparison. It is not itself a way to actually exchange money. When you do need to exchange currency, the provider's spread matters a lot: airport kiosks and tourist bureaus commonly charge a spread of 2–4% over the mid-market rate, while low-cost specialist FX transfer services typically charge closer to 0.1–0.5% — on a $2,000 exchange, that's the difference between paying roughly $60 and paying roughly $4 in hidden markup. For comparing salaries across currencies at equivalent purchasing power rather than a raw conversion, see the PPP Salary Converter.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?
Live mid-market rates from a free, no-signup exchange rate API covering 160+ currencies, updated roughly daily.
Will I get this exact rate at my bank or card provider?
No — this is the mid-market rate, not a retail rate. Banks and card providers add their own margin on top, so the rate you actually get will typically be a bit worse than what's shown here.
How often do the rates update?
Roughly daily. Rates are cached briefly, so back-to-back conversions use the same rate rather than re-fetching every time.
Can I use this in my own app?
Yes — every calculator on Stupidly Clever has a matching REST API and MCP tool that runs the same underlying logic.
What is a spread in currency exchange?
The spread is the markup a currency exchange provider adds on top of the mid-market rate — the gap between the rate they buy a currency at and the rate they sell it at. Airport kiosks and tourist bureaus often charge spreads of 2–4% or more, while low-cost specialist FX services and this mid-market tool aim for spreads closer to 0.1–0.5%.
Which currencies are supported?
Any of the 160+ currencies covered by the underlying rate provider — enter any valid 3-letter ISO currency code in the "from" and "to" fields.
Are exchange rates the same throughout the day?
Real market exchange rates fluctuate continuously as currencies trade, though this calculator updates roughly daily rather than in real time — for most everyday conversions the difference is negligible, but for large or time-sensitive transactions, check a live rate closer to when you actually need to exchange.
